Self defense is an important skill to have because like it or not, people take advantage of each other. You probably wouldn’t be reading this if you didn’t already agree. Martial arts come in a bewildering variety of styles and some of them just don’t seem to work as well as others when it comes to a real street attack. Krav Maga is not like that; it’s used by the Israeli army, the CIA, and the FBI for actual combat. Why Krav Maga? Because it’s designed to let you overcome real attackers in seconds when your life is on the line. Krav Maga is not a sport. It is not gentlemanly; ‘dirty’ moves are par for the course. It was designed for combat and self defense only.
An attacker on the street has a natural advantage. He knows he’s going to attack and he’s probably done it before. You, however, may have no idea what’s about to occur. If you want to overcome an attacker’s natural advantage, you need to use the few seconds during the beginning of an attack to regain control and end the fight. This is exactly what Krav Maga is designed for: using special but realistic moves to end a fight in seconds
Krav Maga moves are designed to feel natural, so you can quickly employ them even when under an attack. This is extremely important because in a real attack, your adrenaline level shoots so high that you lose coordination. That’s when fancy or technical moves become impossible to execute.
Krav Maga quickly teaches you effective self defense that you can use. With some martial arts, you may spend a lot of time mastering technique. In the long run, that can really pay off, but if your goal is to be able to defend yourself, you’ll make a lot more progress much faster by studying Krav Maga. Among martial arts, it’s my top recommendation for self defense purposes.
Where to Learn
The best way to learn a martial art is through classes, but you may not have the time, money or proximity to a Krav Maga school to make this practical. Now you can learn Krav Maga on your own for a lot less than you’d pay at a traditional brick-and-mortar school.
My recommendation for online instruction would be The Best Self Defense Method: The Krav Maga Online Course. The instruction is top-notch and offered for a reasonable price. Other online courses that I’ve looked at want monthly subscriptions. Why? I have no idea. With my recommended program, you pay only once and then you have the materials for life.
Not only will you get video instruction, but you’ll also get an ebook detailing every move step-by-step with pictures. This gives you the best of both worlds. Sitting down to write out each step means that the author put a lot of thought into exactly how the moves are done. If you were just to watch a video, I can guarantee you’d miss something unless you already have an extensive martial arts background. You also get audio lessons in mp3 format so you can study in the car or somewhere else where neither videos nor books are practical. I’ve never heard of this in another martial arts course!
How to Learn
I’m working on putting together a free ebook of my own that will give you advice on how to learn from this or any other video-based martial arts instruction. If you are taking traditional classes this book will come in handy for all the hours of the day during which you aren’t in class. In my book, I’ll cover topics such as:
- Setting a Training Schedule
- Setting Realistic Goals
- Creating Your Own Curriculum
- Finding a Training Partner or Going Solo
- Making Moves Automatic
- Motivation and Avoiding Burnout
My ebook isn’t ready yet, but if you sign up below, I’ll send it to you when it’s done. The form below will also subscribe you to my martial arts newsletter. You know how it goes with those things; there’s a link to unsubscribe at the bottom of every email. You won’t hear from me often. I hate spam as much as you do.
